Hours after being attacked on Wednesday, senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan said that he was attacked by Shri Ram Sena activists who stormed into his chamber and began assaulting him without saying anything.

Bhushan also said that one of the attackers claimed he was from the Sri Ram Sena, a right wing organisation.


Bhushan said that the group should be socially boycotted in the country.

"The government must ban this organisation. They have no moral right to continue," he said.

"Violence cannot be the answer to tackle violence," Bhushan said.

Bhushan was discharged from RML hospital in New Delhi.

The attack on Bhushan, a prominent Team Anna member who is in the forefront of the fight for a strong Lokpal, was shown live on the TV screens when the three youths barged into Chamber No 301 of New Lawyers Chamber opposite Supreme Court.

The men then slapped him, pulled his spectacles, beat him and pinned him to the ground after pushing him out of the chair and kicked him.

Bhushan's assistant who came to his help was also roughed up by the attackers before one of them was caught and beaten up by some people said to be lawyers and others, while the other two escaped.

Regaining his composure, Bhushan said it appeared that the youths targeted him for his stand on Jammu and Kashmir.


On Facebook, a page for the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena claimed responsibility. "We hit prashant bhushan hard in his chamber in supreme court," a post declared. As he was led away, the assailant who was arrested said they had gone to talk to Mr Bhushan about a position he had taken on the Kashmir issue. "We will not let anyone insult our martyrs," he said. The man, who said his name was Inder Verma, is being questioned at the Tilak Marg police station. The other two, Tejinder Singh Bhulla and Vishnu Gupta, are at large.


The Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena is a self-proclaimed "task force against traitors, anti-nationals and the corrupt". They also claim they are "a team of guys who are crazy for the nation and those who can do anything for the nation."


"They were saying that I have made some comments on Kashmir to which they were taking objection. I have said that a plebiscite should be held in Kashmir," he said.

Inder Verma (24), a resident of Karai Village in Nangloi, was arrested for the attack while a hunt is on to nab the other two. Verma claimed that he was the president of Sri Ram Sene's Delhi unit.



The attack was condemned from all quarters, including Home Minister P Chidambaram who said one person (Verma) has been arrested. He has asked Delhi Police to arrest the other two attackers as soon as possible.


In Ralegan Siddhi, Hazare strongly condemned the attack, saying nobody has the right to take law on their hands.
